Abstract
The lymphatic system, traditionally associated with immune surveillance and fluid homeostasis, has emerged as a pivotal player in maintaining brain health. Recent discoveries highlight the brain’s unique clearance mechanisms, particularly the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatic vessels, in removing metabolic waste and facilitating neuroimmune communication. Dysfunction in these pathways has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and multiple sclerosis (MS). This review explores the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system in the brain, its role in waste clearance, and its implications for neurodegenerative disorders, drawing on recent advances in imaging and molecular research.
